VR VERSUS CONVENTIONAL THERAPY

"We conducted a systematic search for randomized controlled trials with adult stroke patients to analyze the effect of specific virtual reality (SVR) and non specific virtual reality (NSVR).

Our results suggest that SVR systems are more beneficial than conventional therapy for upper-limb recovery, whereas NSVR systems are not.

SLOWS COGNITIVE & MOTOR DECLINE

“VR intervention is a beneficial non-pharmacological approach to improve cognitive and motor function in older adults with mild cognitive impairment or dementia, especially in attention/execution, memory, global cognition, and balance

WELLBEING IN OLDER ADULTS IN CARE

The literature on the potential of VR in relation to the well-being of various populations, including older adults, is promising and has applications in terms of pain management, adherence to physical activity, improving physical, mental and cognitive health, and potentially reducing social isolation.

ACCESS &
ADHERENCE

“Thus, in VR programs, several factors may cause patients to enjoy their experiences and become more motivated, even when performing otherwise uninteresting behaviors.”

GAMIFICATIOn
& FUN

"We attribute these motivational effects to the interaction of several factors: an immersive (HMD) VR application that presents an engaging storyline with a social companion embedded into a gamified reward system"

PHYSICAL
MOVEMENT

“VR systems incorporate several theories of neuroscience and motor learning. The games allow for task-oriented practice, repetitive, intensive yet modifiable difficulty to promote an optimal practice schedule.”

NEUROPLASTICITY

“…regarding within group analysis, VR-based exercises reduced the number of falls, while conventional training did not. This will positively influence health economics with a reduction in high medical costs and more importantly may influence morbidity and mortality from falls.”

UPPER LIMB FUNCTION & FINE MOTOR

VR or gaming-based upper extremity rehabilitation poststroke appears to be more
effective than conventional methods. VR interventions showed a significant
treatment advantage (10.4%) over active control treatments for upper limb

PAIN MANAGEMENT

Significant reduction in pain outcomes over the course of the 21-day treatment both within VR group and compared to an audio-only version suggests VR has the potential to provide enhanced treatment and greater improvement across a range of pain outcomes.

BALANCE

WELLBEING
& HAPPINESS

“According to the pilot study and the psychological flow data collected, the VR software can motivate the intended users by providing artificial VR scenes with surreal enjoyable tasks that are logically compact, with a sense of reward and achievement after overcoming challenges.”

DAILY ACTIVITIES

“Our findings indicate that VR improves limb function, walking ability, balance, gait velocity, cadence, and daily life activities to a greater extent than conventional rehabilitation.”
